House

The "Hirase House" was located on Karasuma-dori right across from the Imperial Palace. The west entrance to the Palace Grounds was through the famous Hamagurimon (also Hamagurigomon) which is right across from where the house stood. The house came to be on a corner which the side street is called Shimochojamachi-dori. From the old pictures you can see the front wall of the property, this wall along with an out building was removed to allow for the widening of the street and a sidewalk. It decreased the size of the lot considerably. It looks like the entry gate was saved and moved back in line with the house, the walls of this entryway look reconstructed.

Today The Kyoto Garden Palace sits where the "Hirase House" once stood.

Museum

The Hirase Conchological Museum was located on the corner of Niomon and Okazaki-michi. Right across the street is the Lake Biawa Canal and just beyond that is the Kyoto Zoo. While visiting the Zoo you can see the building across the canal. The original building was torn down and today there sits a Japanese restaurant. The food is quite good and they have a nice little garden inside and also a pool that you sit around which is stocked with live squid ready to be served up.

The only thing that seems to have survived is the power pole and perhaps something in their little garden.
