Koga Ninja Village

The Koka Ninja, or more commonly known today as the Koga Ninja were another famous Ninja Clan and were considered the rivals of the Iga Clan. The Koga Ninja Village and Museum are located in Koka which is in the Shiga Prefecture. As soon as you arrive at the Koka Eki (station), if that is the way you will travel, you'll know you're in the right place. The station is full of murals depicting ninjas.

As soon as you step out of the station you are greeted by a ninja statue holding a yagen.  Koga Ninjas were know for being specialists in medicine, so the statue of the ninja holding the yagen is fitting.

If you need transportation from the station to the village, they have a complimentary shuttle service. Call them from the station and they'll be there in about 5 minutes. If you don't have the number with you, go to the ticket booth and they will give you a mini card which has the number and directions. You can also take a cab for about $5

The Ninja village is not a real village, it is a theme park created by Shunichiro Yunoki, though if no one told you, you would believe it was an authentic village. Yunoki opened the village over 15 years ago. He purchased this 25,000 square meter lot and reconstructed a ninja house and old buildings from the 18th century all with his own funds.

At the village you can throw shurikens, practice climbing a castle wall, cross a pond with mizu-gumo, and take a secret passage underground among other things.

Some areas of the village looked like it was neglected for years, there were no shows or anything else going on when we were there, maybe it was the time of year (November). We only saw a couple and a mother with her son.  In all it was worth going to.
